“That brightest star, there,” he said, pointing again, “Spica, makes it pretty easy to find in the sky, too.”
“It’s fantastic,” I said. “Truly. How did you find the time?”
“I still don’t have any special ability to work on,” he said, revealing a brief flash of unsurety for only the second time since I’d met him. And I took it as a good sign that both instances had been tonight, when we were alone. Maybe I wasn’t the only nervous one in the room. “So I have a lot of unassigned time here,” he went on. “Like pretty much all day, if I want.”
“The talent…and vision…,” I trailed off, shaking my head, still stunned by the enormity of it all. “I can’t believe you did all this. For me.” This is what it feels like to be honored, I thought, my throat thick.
“I think you’re worth it,” he said simply, taking my hand and lacing his strong fingers between mine. With my eyes still trained on the ceiling, I felt, rather than saw his head turn toward me. My racing heart screeched to a halt and for an instant I wasn’t sure I was still on the planet.
I slowly turned my face to meet his and found him impossibly close. It was so intensely still that when he blinked his eyes, his long lashes fluttered a breeze across my face. I felt the current buzzing between our side-by-side limbs and I was sure that even the slightest movement would ignite the inevitable spark, would roar into an engulfing flame.
If he’d been cautious about making the wrong rushed move so far tonight, that hesitation was long gone as his warm lips smoothly met mine. His kiss was everything I’d hoped it would be – confident and strong, but without the intent to conquer. He didn’t so much claim my mouth as draw it to his, calling me to join him at a mutual center.
And instead of the dizzying, disabling weakness I’d expected to feel, fierce desire surged up through my being to answer him – the tide responding to the moon. Without breaking the bond, I turned the rest of my body toward him, curling into the curve of his side. My hands moved of their own accord – one sliding up the smooth cotton of his shirt to land lightly on the right side of his chest; the other, still entwined with his, pulled both up to rest between my breasts and his left side, a bridge between our hearts.
His free hand combed through my hair from the side of my face to the back of my head, and his fingertips brushed the back of my neck, sending stars down my spine, and all my worries over the dance washed away beneath the wave of him.
This was how it was supposed to happen; this was our first kiss as it was meant to be, not some awkward peck in the middle of a loud, crowded dance floor. That would’ve been forced, and fast, and fully unmemorable, which I was suddenly sure Jack had known all along.
